Damaging Hair Care Habits to Avoid

Trying to have beautiful hair can result in a lot of trial and error. Throughout this process most people will, at some point, damage their hair. When hair gets damaged, it becomes very fragile and will easily break. This breakage then leaves us with uncontrollable frizzy hair that looks unhealthy. Continued damage, over time, will leave us with bald spots and thinning hair. Luckily, we here at Beauty ’N Fashion have some tips we would like to share that will help you prevent any further damage to your hair.

Do Not Rub Shampoo into the Full Length Of your Hair

The full length of your hair does not need a ton of shampoo rubbed into it. In order to prevent hair damage, you should do the following:

-massage the shampoo gently into your scalp
-when rinsing, let the water and shampoo flow from your scalp and down the entire length of your hair
-do not rub it into your hair when rinsing

Always Use Conditioner

No matter what, after you shampoo your hair, make sure to use conditioner.

Do Not Rub Your Hair Dry

When you get out of the shower and need to dry your hair, never rub it dry. This can pull out hair that wasn’t supposed to come out and it can also break the ends of your hair. Try the following:

-get a towel and wrap your hair in it and let it sit, absorbing the water
-air dry your hair naturally

Careful Brushing Your Hair Wet

-Straight hair: you should be letting your hair dry for a bit before using a wide-tooth comb to gently comb through your hair.
-Curly or textured hair: you should always be using a wide-tooth comb in your hair when it is damp

Stop Using A Blow Dryer, Curling Iron, and Hot Comb

Heat is very damaging, no matter what other products you put in your hair. This is especially true for anyone using these heating elements on a daily basis. Our suggestions are:

-whenever possible, let your hair naturally air dry
-if you must use anything with heat, put it on the lowest setting
-when using a curling iron or hot comb, don’t let it rest on your hair for long periods of time
-don’t use these things often, maximum once a week, less is better

Switch From Long Lasting Styling Products

Using this kind of product can make your hair brittle. We suggest switching to a different hair style that doesn’t need things like hair spray.

Avoid Hair Styles That Pull Your Hair

These styles can include things like cornrows, ponytails, and buns. Something you can do instead:

-loosely wear these styles
-try hair elastics that are converted rubber bands
-switch hair styles to one that doesn’t require you to pull your hair back

Avoid Tight Hair Extensions and Weaves

Both of these hairstyles pull out your natural hair. Some things you can do instead are:

-use lighter extensions or weaves to make sure they don’t pull your hair out
-go to a salon that specializes in installing these hair styles
-only wear these styles for a maximum of 2-3 months
-scalp hygiene is especially important when wearing either of these styles
-make sure to change things up so you aren’t always wearing extensions or a weave

Put More Time Between Chemical Styling

These things can include permanent hair straightening, perms, and colouring. They naturally damage hair, but if you feel you need to continuously do them, try these tips:

-put more time in between touch-ups. This is especially important for when the air is dry in the winter. Aim for a touch-up every 8-10 weeks minimum.
-only pick one, don’t do more than one chemical styling. If you really want more than one, get your hair straightened or permed first and then get your hair coloured 2 weeks later.
– always use conditioner after you shampoo your hair
-if you are going out in the sun, apply leave-in conditioner that has zinc oxide in it, or if you don’t want to do that, wear a wide brimmed hat

Limit Brushing Your Hair

-only brush your hair after showering or when you have to style it.
-100 strokes a day is a myth, you don’t need to do that
-when brushing, use a wide-tooth comb and gently comb through your hair
-do not tug or pull on your hair while brushing or styling
-gently remove tangles and if necessary, use a moisturizing conditioner to help
